Custer County Middle School Track Team Competes at Sangre de Cristo Track Meet
Coach Eric Prins reported that the middle school team traveled to Mosca and participated in the Sangre De Cristo Track Meet on Friday April 6th.
The boys were led by Joshua Christy and TonyTomasoni. Joshua placed First in the long jump and second in the 100 m. Tony placed second in the discus, third in the shot put and forth in the triple jump.
The girls were led by Kyleigh Martin, who finished second in the 400 m., fifth in the hurdles and was part of the sixth place 1600 m. relay. Brooke Bomgardner finished third in the 800 m. and was part of the 1600 m. relay. Brooke Flynn finished second in the hurdles, Miah Sayhouse placed second in the shot put. Katelyn Daniels and Kylie Carter were the other members of the 1600 relay.
Custer County High School Track Competes at Salida Invitational
On Saturday, April 7th the Custer County Bobcats traveled to Salida to run, jump and throw against 21 other high school teams. The girls placed 13th and the boys were ranked 9th at the end of the day, a day which started out pretty cold but warmed up by noon.
Bobcat girls who placed in the top eight in their respective events—thus earning points for the team—were the following: Kaydin Moore placed 3rd in triple jump, 8th in 300 m. hurdles and tied for 8th in 100 m. hurdles. Kayla Camper placed 5th in long jump and 6th in 100 m. dash. Memphis Curry placed 8th in shot put.

Other girls who placed outside the top eight—but just by a fraction of a second, or an inch in some cases– were these: Peach Dryer, 9th in discus, and Katherine Mullett 16th. In long jump, McKensie Penkoff placed 12th and Haidan Leboeuf 16th. McKensie placed 12th and Kayla Camper 13th in 200 m. dash. Emma Aldrich placed 17th in 100 m. hurdles.
In the continuously updated stats for qualification to go to State at the end of the season, The top 18 state-wide make the grade, and this week two Bobcat girls who weren’t previously listed now are ranked because of their performance in Salida. Kayla Camper took over 11th place in long jump, and Kaydin Moore 16th in triple jump. McKensie Penkoff holds down 17th in long jump. Notable also is Kayla Camper’s 100 m. ranking of 22nd but just a fraction of a second outside #18.
The Bobcat boys placed 9th as a team, due in a large part to freshman runner Micah Zeller’s 1st place finish in the 3200 m. run—his first time running the “2-mile” this season. Micah placed 7th in the 1600 m. run, as well. David Kinsey placed 5th in triple jump and Elias Zeller placed 7th in the 800 m., thus scoring points. Thrower Adam Sapp placed 5th in shot put and 8th in discus.
Strong performances not quite in the first 8 places of an event were posted by Michael Batson, 9th in shot put and 13th in discus. David Kinsey at 9th place in long jump and 12th in 300 m. hurdles. Jakob Morris placed 10th in triple jump and Dylan Schoch placed 12th in 400 m. Elias Zeller placed 11th in 1600m. run. The 4 x 400 m. relay team placed 6th.
Boys top 18 state-wide includes Bobcat runners Micah Zeller rated 14th in the 3200 m. and the 4 x 800 m. relay team at 9th. Jack Bowker is just outside at 19th in the 1600 m. and a couple seconds out in the 800 m. David Kinsey is just three inches out of the top 18 in triple jump.
Joy Parrish, athletic director and coach, adds some finishing touches to this week’s report: About Micah Zeller’s 1st place in the 3200 m., “WHAT A FINISH!! Exciting to watch; he won by 0.01 second.” And, about the team as a whole, there were 15 PR’s (their best-ever records) posted by the various team members. The team goes to two meets this weekend: On Friday, the 13th, starting at 12 p.m. is the “Petrelli and Hunt Invitational” at Garry Berry Stadium in Colorado Springs. Saturday’s meet is the “Thunderstorm” at CSU-Pueblo stadium, starting at 9 a.m.
