Special Speaker to tell stories of Patriot’s Day

Dear C-1 students, teachers, administrators, parents and school board,

You are invited to attend on March 28th, 2019 a Liberty Rocks meeting at Tony’s Mountain Pizza at 6 PM. There are many reasons why this session will benefit students. As most adults know, prior to the American Revolution taverns and coffee houses in the colonies were filled with debate on whether the colonies should declare their independence from England. The “Liberty Rocks” sessions have been designed to duplicate the colonial meetings that were so popular 244 years ago. I have attended about two dozen of these meetings Continue reading Special Speaker to tell stories of Patriot’s Day

Some Judeo Christian faiths teach that we all have a Guardian Angel, especially children who need most guidance and protection during their early and formative years. For the children of Custer County, they are specially blessed because of an opportunity to have even more than just one Guardian Angel. At the West Custer County Library on Main Street an Angel awaits all kids who would like to enroll in various programs now available since she came to work at the library in June of 2018. This Angel hails from the state of Kansas where she lived and went to school graduating from the state university in Art Education. Continue reading Angela McCaffery – Youth Services Librarian

BOE Regular Meeting
—January 15, 2019
McKenzie Huffman,
Education Reporter

Given that many of the committees did not hold meetings during the winter break, Tuesday’s meeting was short and sweet. Items that were discussed in addition to, or beyond approval included the NV5 Update. Again, no NV5 representative was present. Director Lee brought up that it has been two months since he requested further information regarding some of the contractors charging for their leasing of iPads, trucks, etc. Superintendent Payler reported that he too had sent correspondence asking for clarification regarding those types of charges, concluding that he would follow up on the topic.
In the District Financial Report, Amy Perschbacher mentioned that there was one odd item included in the report in the form of –$16,788.53. This amount was funds from local tax, that had been labeled incorrectly during the last fiscal year, and was paid to the school in error, and had to be reimbursed. On a positive note there was an increase in the State Equalization payment, due to an increase in per student funding. The amount was $93,501, when it is
usually in the $80k range. Continue reading Custer County School Board Meeting January 2019

Bobcats vs Burros at South Park by Krissi Camper

In a wild offensive shootout, Custer County traveled to 10,000 feet and endured a see-saw first half to soundly defeat South Park 48-34 and earn a winning season.
The Burros took the opening kickoff and marched down the field and got on the board first but in what would be a theme for the day, the Bobcats would stop them on the 2 point conversion to make it 6-0 Burros. The Bobcats answered quickly with a 38 yard TD run by Cole Budds, Ray Perez added the 2 point conversion to make it 8-6. Continue reading Bobcats Outlast the Burros 48-34

Bobcats Roll at Homecoming, Tailgate Party a Success

by CCSD-1 Coaching Staff
The Miami-Yoder Buffaloes came to Custer County for the annual homecoming game and left with a 72-0 loss on their record. It was a beautiful day that began with the dedication of a brand-new scoreboard which was donated by the Aught-6-Ranch.

New Scoreboard

Following the kickoff, the Bobcats stopped Miami in 3 downs and an errant snap gave CCHS the ball on the Buffaloes 30 and in a few plays, Chad Lewenkamp hit Elias Zeller on a touchdown pass that put Custer County up to stay. Lewenkamp added the extra point and it was 8-0.
A key 4th down stop by Lewenkamp and Wyatt Aldrich gave the Bobcats the ball back and, in a few plays, Cole Budds was walking into the end zone followed by 2 point conversion by Ray Perez. Continue reading Bobcats Roll at Homecoming, Tailgate Party a Success

Bobcats Move to 2-0 Under the Lights

by CCSD-1 Coaching Staff

Bobcat Tackled

It was a big night at Henrich Field on Friday, the Custer County Bobcats had their opening home game against Las Animas and played under the lights for the first time at Mile and a Half Stadium.  The Custer County Booster Club made the experience possible and the players made the most of the evening downing the Trojans from Las Animas 38-14.

The Bobcats received the ball and marched down the field on an opening 50 yard, 6 play drive that was highlighted by a 37 yard strike from Chad Lewenkamp to Michael Stanley.  Cole Budds scored on a 3 yard run to make it 6-0 with just a few minutes into the 1st quarter. The Bobcats defense swarmed the Trojans on the next series and the offense went back to work pounding out its run game with senior Ray Perez scoring on a 3 yard run to make it 12-0.  As the skies darkened and the first night game in over 10 years at Custer County began to be reality, Las Animas showed they had some fight in them. The Trojans marched down the field and scored a touchdown and extra point to make it 12-8.

The 3rd possession for the Bobcats came up empty and Las Animas began to drive again.  Junior Cole Budds stepped in to strip the ball from a Trojan runner and Jake Morris was close by to scoop up the fumble and rumble 20 yards giving the Bobcats the ball at midfield.  Driven behind the running of quarterback Chad Lewenkamp, the Cats moved down to the 2 yard line where an errant handoff turned the ball over to Las Animas. The Bobcat defense would hold off until the half ended 12-8.  “Although the score was close at half, we felt in control of our destiny,” said head coach Troy Bomgardner. “We had done what we wanted offensively and they only had a few plays on offense that kept their drives alive so we felt the game was ours to win in the 2nd half.”

The Bobcats went on defense first in the 2nd half and held Las Animas to 3 down and a punt and this is when the Custer County began to take the game over.  Ray Perez broke through on 4th down and blocked a punt and then on 1st down Budds bolted for a 25 yard touchdown with Lewencamp adding a 2 point conversion taking the game to 20-8.

However, the Trojans would not quit and drove down for another score bring the game to 20-14.  An onside kick recovery by Las Animas kept the fans wondering where this game was going but on the next defensive play, Custer County forced another turnover when junior Patrick Post intercepted a pass with a good runback to the Bobcats 40 yard line.  Again, on the 1st play following the interception, Budds busted through on a 60 yard touchdown run. “Cole is becoming more comfortable running the football,” said Bomgardner. “The rest of the season should be exciting to watch him progress.”

The Bobcats defense began to tighten up and forced a punt to junior Post which he made a good 35 yard return to the 50 yard line.  On the next snap Lewenkamp found Post for a 50 yard touchdown pass to take the score to 32-14. The teams traded a few drives with again the Cats fumbling inside the 10.  The JV squad came in and shut down the Trojans and even had a short scoring drive with freshman Ben Penkoff connecting with freshman Sam Babcock for a TD.

Leading the Bobcats offensively were Budds with 134 yards rushing followed by Perez with 58 yards.  Lewencamp finished with over 100 yards passing to Post and Stanley. Defensively, Budds had a big game with 22 tackles and Perez with 13 tackles.  The Bobcats again led in the turnover game with 5 takeaways and only giving up 2 turnovers.

The Bobcats have an off week this week on the varsity level and will be at home vs Simla on Sept 15th at 1pm at Henrich Field.

Wet Mountain Minors – First Place Standing

by Amy Moulton
The Wet Mountain Minors youth baseball team kept a firm hold on their first-place standing with a week of blowouts. On Tuesday, July 10th, a hard-hitting home run by Grant Rusk, a triple by Colt Moulton with an RBI and walks from the Tigers’ pitchers started out the game with a strong lead. Then Moulton pitched three strikeouts, only allowing one run to end the inning at 8-1. In the second inning, Braden Troyer hit a triple with an RBI, which was followed by three runs by walk. Taylor Bradford finished the batting with a double, hitting in two RBIs. Kate Doughty pitched for the first time this season, getting the ball across the plate for two strikeouts, four runs by hits and only two runs by walk. Relief pitcher Rusk Grant came in with three strikes in a row to finish the inning at 14-7. Continue reading Wet Mountain Minors – First Place Standing
