CUSTER COUNTY COWBOY: World Class Calf Roper

CUSTER COUNTY COWBOY
World Class Calf Roper

by Fred Hernandez,
Sangre de Cristo Sentinel

The sharp rush of adrenaline surges through horse and
rider as the gate bangs open and the calf makes a dash to escape. The whir of rope as it slices through the air from the hand of an expert landing perfectly around the animal’s neck. In split seconds mount slides to a stop, rider is off and calf is tied down while the crowd roars in delight.
That’s rodeo at its best and some of the best rodeo stars come from right here in Custer County. Sam Stafford, only fourteen years old, is already recognized as one of the most skilled at the art of calf roping.
Born in Pueblo, Colorado, and a lifelong resident of Westcliffe, Colorado, Sam, who grew up on the family ranch, Lazy V Cattle Company, was introduced to the saddle by his father when only a toddler. His love of horses will last a lifetime.
At age twelve, Sam and his horse JR came under the masterful
tutelage of World Champion and professional horse trainer Jack Wright of Penrose, Colorado. With thirty world and reserve
titles including the 2014 American Paint Horse Association world championship title, Mr. Wright is considered Royalty among the elite in the kingdom of roping and reining. With his inborn skills Sam flourished and quickly developed into the world class winner he has become.

On the Junior High/High School Rodeo Association, Sam won the State Title in Tie Down Roping for Colorado. This qualified for him and his horse, JR, to compete in Des Moine, Iowa, at the Junior
High National Finals where he placed 4th in the World for Tie Down Roping. Recently, in a crowded field of 1,500 contestants in Guthrie, Oklahoma, at the National Little Britches Finals Rodeo, Sam won the title for 7th in the World for Team Roping and 10th in the World for Breakaway Roping.
With these wins Sam has qualified for the Vegas Tuffest as well and the Hooey Junior Patriot to be held this December in Las Vegas, Nevada, known in the rodeo world as the most prestigious arena. The future for this young star includes his plan to enter Tarleton State University in Stephensville, Texas, nationally recognized as
having one of the best rodeo facilities and to be a part of their rodeo team. Beyond that, Sam wants to be an accomplished horse trainer. Sam says he would have been a bull rider rather than a roper but “Mom would not let me”.
Huge congratulations are definitely in order for Sam Stafford who has brought much honor to his native Custer County. Thank you, Sam Stafford. You are truly the Champ.

Celebration which took place in Westcliffe, Colorado on June 14.

From TL Davis Blog:

TL Davis: No Safe Places   link https://tldavis.substack.com/p/no-safe-places

It’s easy to see the war from studying congress, or the left or the deep state, the CIA, FBI, etc., because there, it’s all laying out for anyone to see who wants to see it; if they know what they’re looking for. Those who dig a little deeper past rhetoric and see the culmination of that rhetoric as action such as calling a protest a riot and a riot a protest. Still, it seems a distant vision of Spy vs Spy, 007 or Mission Impossible, when, in fact, it’s not so distant and not nearly as elegant. The civil war being waged between political appointees (directors and secretaries of different departments) and the bureaucratic dictatorship I’ve often warned of goes on in the halls of DC, but the lunatic left are their minions, their advance troops to put the threat to the American people directly and they’re everywhere. And, as such, are often defended by communist judges and big-city police chiefs. They could not act so aggressively if that were
not true.

Of course, none of this could happen in a quiet valley in the central Rocky Mountains of Colorado, but it did. This is the extent, this story I’m about to reproduce here, to which the militant left, struggling to find a cause, any cause to attack their political enemies, is an account of that reality that should reverberate through all of peaceful,
rural America.

Westcliffe, a town of roughly 800 people, that plays much larger, because it’s a shopping and supply point for Custer County, a large area of farms, ranches and tourist attractions. Westcliffe, one might remember, is known for its massive Open Carry March during their Independence Day celebration. It was attended by Mike Vanderbough and myself at different times. If you have no plans for the Fourth, they welcome those [want] to participate. Often, there are more in the Open Carry contingent than on the sidewalks.

The following is straight from the article in the Sangre de Cristo Sentinel of which electronic subscriptions are available. It’s a newspaper I read faithfully.

Stained Glass: Catholic Church Installs Ninth Of Twelve Panels

Stained Glass Windows Project
Catholic Church Installs Ninth Of Twelve

Panel 9

by Fred Hernandez
On Tuesday, May 6th, the team of Custer County’s Glass Master Douglas Bayer installed the ninth stained glass window on the north side of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish church on 5th Street in Westcliffe town. The beautiful new stained-glass window is an integral part of the epic biblical story relating to the Twelve Tribes of Israel, with each of the tribes represented in each of the twelve windows. This ninth window in particular is representative of the tribe of Judah. The Biblical Narrative in the Book of John has it that Judah is the tribe of kings, the most preeminent of  the twelve tribes. Many important persons came from this tribe including King David.
In the Catholic church, the twelve tribes are known as the Old Covenant Community while the twelve apostles are the New Covenant Community established by our Lord Jesus. In the stained glass windows the names of the tribes are inscribed at the top of the window while at the bottom is featured the name of one of the apostles thus signifying the connection between the old and the new covenants with Jesus as the cornerstone.

The ninth window has Judah and a menorah on the top panel and the bottom has the name of the apostle Jude. Also known as Thaddeus, Jude is the patron saint of lost causes and impossible situations. The menorah, the seven branched candelabra, represents faith, holiness and the ever-present guidance of God. It reflects a deep connection to Jewish and Christian traditions. The calf resting in the shade of an acacia tree symbolizes the community with a gentle spirit and tranquility reminding us to approach life with kindness and respect. This window with sub-Saharan features depicts the importance of Africa with its fifty-four recognized countries, each with its own culture and several other unrecognized territories. Also noteworthy is the significance of African priests in our Diocese and Parish history as they overshadow our communities with their love, service and guidance much like the tree provides shade and comfort for the resting calf. A bird flies high in the sky symbolic of freedom, hope and a Divine connection that extends to the idea of transcending earthly limitations and reaching for higher ideals.

The bottom of the panel has a censer near the tree and violet flowers. The flowers depict humility, modesty and is a reminder of the widows and orphans; while the censer indicates the burning of incense with the smoke rising up as our prayer offerings to God. Throughout all the twelve windows the blue river of life is shown flowing prominently in the background indicating the nourishment it provides everywhere, even in parched lands. The beautiful landscape beckons thoughts of the new Jerusalem; God’s Heavenly
Kingdom is a lush and magnificent garden.

With only three more windows to go this project is almost completed. The Church looks appropriately beautiful just as the house of God should always be. Come and visit sometime and feel the warmth of God’s Fatherly presence. Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam.
All for the Glory of God.

New Towing Service in the Valley

by Fred Hernandez

She was a cute little girl growing up in her father’s world. A world of heavy equipment and large vehicles. As soon as Aspen could reach the controls she was learning to operate some of them. At the age of fifteen she was actively helping out as much as she could. As she matured her interest in equipment and heavy machines grew until it became part of her.
Aspen Baltzly is a home grown product of the valley who went to the local school. After graduation she went on to WyoTech to take up what she loved best, working with big equipment. She studied and earned her credentials as a Diesel Mechanic and has an AA degree in Business Management. She also took courses in welding. All this training and years of hands-on experience makes her eminently qualified to run her new business which was only formed late last month.
Today the twenty six year old daughter of Brad Baltzly, Aspen, has started a business that is in great need in Custer County. A towing service. And so, BALTZLY TOWING LLC was born. Her tow truck is an International 2300 wrecker style vehicle with a boom that sports dual winches. It is fully equipped with a stinger and wheel lift which means she can handle any situation including roll overs. In fact, she already came to the rescue of a propane truck that broke down a few days ago.
When not out doing towing jobs Aspen helps her Dad run equipment in the excavation business. Aside from her extensive experience in hauling she also has a hazmat endorsement on her CDL. This is one truly capable, ambitious young lady willing to do the hard work it takes to become successful. She has filled a much needed niche in Custer since we had lost our towing services a couple of years back. For all that time those who had car problems and needed a tow had to wait for the service to be provided from Penrose. At night and in the cold weather that can be one very long wait. Take note, then, in case you ever need the help. Aspen is there for you. Just call BALTZLY TOWING LLC at 719-458-9929. That number is available 24 Hours daily. The Email address is baltzlytowing@gmail.com
On Facebook you can reach Aspen at Baltzly Towing LLC.
