Bobcats Roll at Homecoming, Tailgate Party a Success

by CCSD-1 Coaching Staff
The Miami-Yoder Buffaloes came to Custer County for the annual homecoming game and left with a 72-0 loss on their record. It was a beautiful day that began with the dedication of a brand-new scoreboard which was donated by the Aught-6-Ranch.

New Scoreboard

Following the kickoff, the Bobcats stopped Miami in 3 downs and an errant snap gave CCHS the ball on the Buffaloes 30 and in a few plays, Chad Lewenkamp hit Elias Zeller on a touchdown pass that put Custer County up to stay. Lewenkamp added the extra point and it was 8-0.
A key 4th down stop by Lewenkamp and Wyatt Aldrich gave the Bobcats the ball back and, in a few plays, Cole Budds was walking into the end zone followed by 2 point conversion by Ray Perez. Perez came up with a 4th down stop on the next series and then on 1st down Lewenkamp hits Patrick Post in perfect stride for a 40-yard touchdown pass. Big senior Greyson Barwick was given a chance for a 2-point conversion but came up short.
After the Bobcat JV offense was stopped, the varsity was given another try and Budds took off on a 44-yard TD run. A broken play 2-point conversion ended successfully when Lewenkamp scrambled and found Post all alone in the end zone. “It was just a day of lots of good things to happen,” exclaimed head coach Troy Bomgardner. “We had a few weeks of disappointments and we were ready for some success!”
The defense continued to stop the Buffaloes and senior Perez bolted 42 yards on a perfectly blocked counter by Adam Sapp, Wyatt Aldrich, Elijah Zeller, Jakob Morris, and Patrick Post. The JV team added the 2-point conversion from Ben Penkoff to Sam Babcock. Once again before halftime, Lewenkamp ran a near perfect option play and fooled most of the crowd as he waltzed into the end zone on a 34-yard touchdown run. Penkoff added another 2-point conversion and it was 38-0 at halftime.
Following crowning of the king and queen at halftime, it was all Bobcats the 2nd half as numerous players got into the action. A 55-yard option score from Lewenkamp to Perez started the second half. After a 4th down stop, Penkoff would scamper from 41 yards out with sophomore JD Morris adding the 2-point conversion. “It was really fun to see our young kids get into the game and do well,” noted Bomgardner.
Budds would add a 31-yard touchdown run to keep the new scoreboard lit up. After stopping Miami for another 3 and out, the JV offense marched down the field again and added a last score with a pass from
Penkoff to Babcock.
Perez would lead the Bobcats rushing with 134 yards with Budds adding nearly 100 yards. Lewenkamp would be 2 of 3 passing with 2 touchdowns to Zeller and Post. Defensively, Budds would lead with 16 tackles, with Perez following with 12 and freshman Tony Tomassoni adding 6 tackles.
The Bobcats will travel for the final 2 weeks of the regular season and are still hoping with victories they may earn a spot in post-season play. This Saturday they travel to rival South Park for a 1 p.m. kickoff in Fairplay.
