April 14 BoH: LTE to Tribune Requesting Retraction and Apology

by George Gramlich,
News and Notations
With the “spike” prediction by one of the Board of Health board members apparently not happening, the only drama this week was the Board’s final vote to send Jordy “Red Bug” Hedberg, Editor of the Wet Mountain Tribune a request to print a Letter to the Editor from them to Jordy asking Jordy to retract and apologize for being a bad boy. We’ll get to that tasty tidbit in a minute. Continue reading April 14 BoH: LTE to Tribune Requesting Retraction and Apology

April 6th BOCC: Planning & Zoning Report, STR’s, Zoom Stays

by George Gramlich
Pretty mundane stuff at this one. The Custer County Board of County Commissioners’ April 6, 2021 meeting started at 9 a.m. with Chair Bill Canda and member Tom Flower present in the throne room and member Kevin Day participating via Zoom (as he is finishing up his isolation after testing positive for the red bug.) County Attorney Clint Smith and County Clerk Kelley Camper were also present. Continue reading April 6th BOCC: Planning & Zoning Report, STR’s, Zoom Stays

Ham and FM Radio for Survival Communications

by Mark Bunch
President Royal Gorge Gun Cub & Chairman Fremont County NRA
Once upon a time I traveled completely across the country coast to coast when I was only 17 years old. There wasn’t any cell phones back then, or MapQuest or MTV. Every couple of days I would call my (dearly departed) mother and let her know that I wasn’t in jail or dead or anything. Not sure how intelligent that feat was but I have a lot of great memories from that trip. The world wasn’t exactly a safe place even back then, however, I did have an 11 meter (CB) amateur radio in my car and my trusty Colt 1911 just in case I needed to call a fellow motorist for help or call for help for that fellow motorist or something…Smile… In that day, before CB radios were deregulated, they worked fairly well and it wasn’t uncommon to be able to transmit 20 plus miles from a base station and up to 10 miles for a mobile radio depending on terrain.

Change to Burn Permit Process in Custer/Fremont Counties Coming Summer 2021

The FRECOM dispatch agency will be changing the way burn permits are obtained in all of their responding districts. We are unsure of when these changes will take place, but we wanted to get the information out to district residents sooner rather than later. The new online system should be in effect prior to Summer 2021.
If you wish to obtain a burn permit, you will register through the new website and fill out the burn permit application. The application process is based on your geographic area and should give you the appropriate fire agency’s application. Once the application is filled out, the fire district will receive a notification to approve or deny your application. The system will then remember your address, contact info, and your permit number.
On the day of your controlled burn, you will call the phone number provided on the website, and the system will log that you are burning. FRECOM and all fire departments will have an automated map that will show where each controlled burn is located. The system will also tell you if there are any fire restrictions in place at that time. Once you are done with the controlled burn you will call in again and the system will log that you’re done burning for the day. There will also be a dashboard on the website where you can log that you are starting or finishing a burn, see current fire restrictions, update your information, etc. Implementing this system means we will be tracking all controlled burns (agricultural and open) since residents will no longer be able to call FRECOM and notify them of burning.
We are sorry that we cannot give you more accurate information on the start date, phone number, or website at this time. Once we have this information, we will put out another press release, have the info available on our social media page, as well as the WMFPD and County website.

“Meat In Day” Goes Big Time in Happy Valley

It was Saturday, March 20th, the day “the powers that be” decided would be designated “no meat” day for the people of Colorado. No sooner was it revealed on the mainstream media and various other fake news outlets, than the freedom loving people of the state reacted with outrage and then with vim, vigor and vitality. Immediately plans were being made to hold what would be a historic statewide BBQ party of epic proportions to celebrate our great ranching industry. For us here in Happy Valley, it was to be the GREAT CUSTER COUNTY COOKOUT; the biggest barbecue party ever held in these parts. Continue reading “Meat In Day” Goes Big Time in Happy Valley

Bobcats Football Kicks Off Spring Season

Press Release

The Custer County High School Football Team opened a never-done-before spring season Friday night at John Mall High School. The team was defeated 60-0 in its first game. The team is using the spring season to prepare for the 2021 fall season and will focus on improvement each week. Although the score doesn’t indicate it, the coaching staff saw a number of things that are encouraging for the team. “We are the youngest and most inexperienced team I’ve had since I’ve been at CCHS,” said head coach Troy Bomgardner. “Our plan is to build for the future and become competitive by the end of this season. We have an awesome group of players who desire greatly to improve, they are doing everything we ask of them and there is no doubt we will get better each week.”
Leading offensively for the Bobcats was Ben Stafford at quarterback with 75 yards rushing. “Ben showed great determination Friday as it was his first ever game at QB plus his first varsity start as a freshman, there is no doubt he will continue to get better each week,” noted Bomgardner Leading defensively was Tony Tomassoni with 10 tackles. “Tony showed up in a big way Friday night, he’s bigger, stronger, and faster than he was last year,” Bomgardner said.
The Bobcats will be at home this Saturday against Justice at 1 p.m. There are no ticket restrictions and all fans are welcome!

Left to Right: CCSCD VP Sheron Berry, President Robert Miller and Treasurer Trent Stafford with Mr. & Mrs. Dunmire (owners of Summit Logging, recognized for excellent logging practices) Byron Holm, logger for Summit, Brian Frazier, mechanic for Summit, and Elin Ganschow, Music Meadows Ranch, who won rancher of the year award.

Not a widely known but very important local organization is the Custer CountyConservation District, an entity that works closely with the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) This group of dedicated individuals work tirelessly to help the land and maintain its health by implementing conservation practices and standards that promote long term sustainability. Established by Congressional Act in 1936, Custer’s group, formed in 1939, has been around for eighty two years. While districts are formed for different reasons, the district for Custer County was established mainly for the prevention of erosion and to control prairie dogs. LTE: 9News Does Hit Piece on a Conservative County

To Whom It May Concern and 9News Denver:
I’m thoroughly disgusted with your representation of Custer County, Colorado, in a “news” piece done by Katie Eastman. (https://www.9news.com/)
This is a vlog on the Tenacious Unicorn Ranch LLC [TUR] that has become a touchstone for the way you present our community to your community; and to the United States of America at large. For those undereducated among you, and there are many, a touchstone is a test or criterion for the qualities of a thing, but Katie Eastman’s reporting is a lie. It is slanted, biased, prejudiced and just plain wrong. She and whoever she answers to should do their homework before publishing this trash.
Her portrayal relies on the so-called editor of the Wet Mountain Tribune, 1 of 2 local newspapers published here, a Mr. Jordan T. Hedberg who poses as a life-long Westcliffe resident…he isn’t. He is a graduate of Custer County High School because his parents moved here when he was 11 or 12 and in my opinion that does not make him an expert on rural Colorado. He has always belittled our conservative lifestyle and it’s a wonder he returned here to live after receiving his Bachelors in the Liberal Arts from Monmouth College in Illinois. Ms. Eastman records Hedberg’s perspective of the Wet Mountain Valley as a place where evil conservatives (who stalk good liberals and transgendered people) dwell. Reference your reporter’s statement that… ‘this is a community that voted 70% for President Donald J. Trump (very long pause) twice.’ The horror! What is she inferring? Does she think that it is a crime to vote for a person that a portion of America disagrees with? She could report on the entire country’s percentage of population that voted for President Trump “twice” and use her limited brain instead of her useless emotions to speculate about Custer County.
This is still America until it isn’t, so I would remind her and 9News that it is no one’s business how a community votes and if she thinks portraying us thusly will influence us otherwise, she has another think coming. Why is it that this city-dweller portends to know what life is like in our mountains, mountains that the TUR LLC people cannot seem to stop talking about? Are these mountains that only liberals and transgendered people can appreciate?
The TUR LLC people came to the Valley in February of 2020, if they really did because the property owners are shown on qPublic.net as Paul A. Mendoza, Sky Nelson and Margarita R. Mendoza (Menoza?); and they haven’t been threatened by anyone — that has been reported…anywhere! Still, Eastman films a deputy at the ranch speaking politely to the “owners” regarding an animal abuse call. Animal abuse is a common occurrence in many places and you would think that as a Denver liberal and as transgendered people they would applaud a deputy protecting the rights of animals. The fact that a film crew was there just in time to capture this inferenced “slight” on transgendered persons makes me question who exactly called in the abuse allegation.
I realize that Denver 9News thinks that we country folk are imbeciles, but you would be wrong. Long before the tenacious unicorns came to this valley there were hard-working ranchers living humbly and quietly asking nothing from others, but you’re making heroes out of people with their hands out to everyone in the name of ‘oppression’ as if they are an abused population. They make a mockery out of true minority populations seeking a better life. This tenacious unicorn ranch is a Limited Liability Corporation for those who care to know the truth and here is their public information: The Tenacious Unicorn Ranch LLC is a business entity registered with Colorado Department of State (CDOS). The business entity number is #20181895208. The business office address is located at XXXX County Road XXX, Westcliffe, CO 81252. (Editor/GG: We deleted their physical address.) The business [was] formed on November 16, 2018. The entity type is limited liability company. The business status is ‘good standing’.
I don’t think this group is everything their purporting to be i.e., oppressed, hunted, hated by this community. It might be a ruse to extract money and sympathy from those ignorant enough to buy into their scheme, there’s a lot of that going on nowadays. I truly resent Katie Eastman’s piece on our town and community, she should be ashamed of her baseless inferences about peaceful Americans. No one is making a big deal about the TUR LLC people except her, Jordan Hedberg and other liberal news outlets; and they are simply trying to stir up trouble where there is none. There are those of us who can smell you liberals and your fake news a mile away and maybe it’s time to do something about it, even if it’s only to call you on it.

Regretfully,
Lisa Frank,
Rural Custer County, CO

Editor’s Note/llv: Interesting that 9 news (as other news groups have done , ie Vice) put up links for TUR’s funding and fundraising aps, with the article. One is Patreon,  Etsy for their yarn, and GoFundMe which was taken off the article headliner later but but continues to garner money through other web sites such as the one below where TUR  is quoted as saying,

The Tenacious Unicorn Ranch is under attack by local bigots and militia. They have threatened violence, publicly, to us and those that help or associate with us. They have encroach on our property, armed, at night,
with the intent to harm those of us that live here. We need help,

Sandersons Set the Record Straight on Proposed
Special Use Permit

To Custer County Citizens;
As newcomers to the valley, hoping to semi-retire, we find ourselves facing a substantial amount of unprecedented backlash. I am taking a moment to address some of the misconceptions that have been circulated on various public venues regarding the special use permit application for our 35-acre property (located at 115 CR 324) that is now in the final phase of the zoning special use permit application process.
