It’s 2 a.m. Whats that noise?

by Mark Bunch/President Royal Gorge Gun Club/Chairman Fremont County NRA

You have had a rough week. Fighting with your spouse and the summer heat has been merciless this year, making it almost impossible to sleep at night. This is probably the first night you have actually been able to fall asleep in a couple of weeks and now something has just woken you up. You lie there listening to the sounds of your house, your wife is sound asleep as is your ankle biting pet dog at the foot of the bed. Continue reading It’s 2 a.m. Whats that noise?

Choosing your Combat
Handgun
I confess to loving all things gun related, but there are great, good, ok, and bad choices that can be made in choosing a tool to defend your life with. While I have quite the collection of revolvers in all sorts of calibers, using a revolver for a combat handgun is going to put you at an almost certain disadvantage. If you choose to use your concealed carry pistol as your combat handgun, choose wisely, grasshopper. Continue reading Combat Handgun Training Pt 2

Hopefully most of you reading this have a basic familiarity with handguns, also known as side arms. In my basic Handgun Training article, a couple of months ago I covered some absolutely critical information for learning to shoot your handgun and for those of you who missed it, I will give a brief recap of the more important things you need to know.
Right or Left Eye
Dominant
If you don’t know this for certain, this is going to be, and likely always has been a huge problem for you when it came to shooting a handgun. With both of your eyes open, extend your right index finger in front of you at arm’s length where the end of your finger covers something up like this light bulb on my ceiling fan. Dedicated NVD or Clip On NVD Weapon Sight
Now that we have a good working knowledge of how NVDs work and what each generation of NVD offers the end user, there is another choice for you to consider. Dedicated NVD weapon sights can be Gen 1, 2, 2+, 3, 3 auto-gated tubes. Clip on NVDs are positioned in front of your regular day scope and can be purchased in Gen 2, 2+, 3, and 3 auto-gated tubes. Gen 2 Night Vision
Device (NVD)
Major improvements in image-intensifier tubes resulted in Generation-2 NVDs. They offer improved resolution and performance over Generation-1 devices, and are considerably more reliable. The biggest gain in Generation 2 is the ability to see in extremely low light conditions, such as a moonless night. This increased sensitivity is due to the addition of the microchannel plate to the image-intensifier tube. Continue reading Stalking the Night Part 2

Stalking the Night Part 1

Part 1 of 3 : Gen 1 Night Vision Devices (NVD)

I remember as a young man I spent a considerable amount of time hiking, backpacking and camping in the mountains, usually by myself. Getting away from it all and honing my skills of self-reliance at the same time has always appealed to me. Something on a primal level back to my cave man ancestry no doubt, lol.

It has been my experience, that anytime you are completely alone,  your awareness and senses go into overdrive, bombarding you with all sorts of new stimuli. At times, this can become overwhelming and I would be lying if I stated that I have never had the hair on the back of my neck stand up when I was deep in the woods all by myself.
